Education Essentials Bursary reopens to support more young people across the borough

The Education Essentials Bursary is set to reopen, offering a fresh opportunity for young people across the borough to access vital financial support and continue their education.

Following the success of the latest round of payments, which closed on 31 March 2026, the scheme will return with a new deadline of 31 July 2026, thanks to an extension of funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

The popular scheme will continue in its current format, providing one-off £200 payments to eligible students aged 16-19. With a remaining budget of £9,400, up to 47 additional students will be able to benefit from this latest tranche. The scheme will close on 31 July 2026, or earlier if all funds are allocated.

The reopening follows a strong second phase of delivery. Between October 2025 and March 2026, the council received 55 applications, with 53 students successfully awarded funding, totalling £10,600 in direct support. This marks an improvement in uptake compared to the previous round, reflecting enhanced communications through the council website, social media campaigns and community outreach.

Students from a wide range of subject areas benefited from the bursary, including Animal Care, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Law, Psychology, Sport, and Creative Media, highlighting the breadth of ambition and talent across the borough.

The scheme is designed to help remove financial barriers to education, supporting costs such as transport, books, equipment and course materials. It remains targeted at students from households receiving Universal Credit, ensuring support reaches those who need it most.

A council spokesperson said:

"This is fantastic news and we're delighted to be able to reopen the Education Essentials Bursary for our young people.

"We are committed to ensuring that every young person in the borough has the opportunity to stay in education and succeed, regardless of their financial circumstances.

"The response to the previous round shows just how important this support is. These bursaries are making a real difference, helping students stay focused on their studies without the added pressure of essential costs.

"We would strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to apply as soon as possible. With limited funding available, early applications are key. This is an investment not only in individual futures, but in the future of our borough."

The Education Essentials Bursary continues to play a key role in supporting improved educational outcomes locally, as part of the council's wider commitment to skills, opportunity and economic growth.

Students and families are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment, as demand is expected to be high once again.
